Santa Ana History & Facts

 
Mumbai City In 1769, Don Gaspar Portola who was leading a Franciscan expedition discovered a valley. This valley was named as the valley Santa Ana in honor of Saint Anne and the Santa Ana River.

After the Gold Rush of California in 1849, it leads to tremendous increase in the population which was followed by the Civil War. Most of the large landscapes were divided and sold to the people wanted to reside in this part of the country. In 1869, William H. Spurgeon purchased around 70 acres of land and drew up a town plan, as it was near to Santa Ana River and Santa Valley; the town was named as Santa Ana.
Due to rich soil and favorable climate, the cultivation was on boom making the city a commercial center which was supported by its central location in the valley. With the introduction of train in 1877, it took the path of development which results in the increase in population. William Spurgeon became the first mayor, when the city was incorporated on June 1, 1886.

According to estimation the population of the town is around 355,662 in 2009. The economy of the city largely depends on the processing of sugarcane, coffee along with textile and food products industries.
